{"id":2259,"date":"2017-12-01T11:19:51","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T11:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cepi-eurokraft.org\/?p=2259"},"modified":"2017-12-06T08:09:14","modified_gmt":"2017-12-06T08:09:14","slug":"carbon-footprint-of-the-european-paper-sack-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cepi-eurokraft.org\/?p=2259","title":{"rendered":"Carbon footprint of the European paper sack"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"text_1\">\n<p>For more than 15 years the kraft paper and paper sack industry has run studies to measure its environmental impact, providing the basis for continuous improvement.<\/p>\n<p>The latest Carbon Footprint \/ LCI Study has shown improvements in 4 main categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction in <b>purchased electricity<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Reduction in <b>greenhouse gas emissions<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Optimisation of <b>material use<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Reduction in <b>f<\/b><b>ossil fuel consumption<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today more than 50% of the total energy consumption of the European pulp and paper industry comes from biomass fuels which are CO<sub>2<\/sub> neutral.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2276\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2276\" class=\"wp-image-2276 size-large\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Infografik_2018_komplett_web-1024x724.png\" alt=\"Carbon footprint of the European Paper Sack in 2015\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cepi-eurokraft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Infografik_2018_komplett_web-1024x724.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.cepi-eurokraft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Infografik_2018_komplett_web-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cepi-eurokraft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Infografik_2018_komplett_web-768x543.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cepi-eurokraft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Infografik_2018_komplett_web-400x284.png 400w, https:\/\/www.cepi-eurokraft.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Infografik_2018_komplett_web-1080x764.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carbon footprint of the European Paper Sack in 2015<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Between 2007 and 2015, the European kraft paper and paper sack industry made continued and significant improvements to its carbon footprint:<\/p>\n<section>\n<div id=\"c279\">\n<div class=\"ce-textpic ce-right ce-intext\">\n<div class=\"ce-bodytext\">\n<ul>\n<li>The carbon intensity of 1 tonne of average European kraft paper \u2013 which accounts for 60% of the carbon footprint of a paper sack \u2013 was optimised by 20%.<\/li>\n<li>In the further course from cradle to gate, the overall carbon intensity of one individual paper sack has improved by 22%, partly due to lightweighting efforts.<\/li>\n<li>Extending the analysis to include additional aspects would give an even more complete picture of the carbon footprint of European paper sacks. Taking into account end-of-life emissions and any benefits arising from emissions avoided due to recovery and waste management activities reduces the carbon footprint per average European paper sack to 85 gCO<sub>2<\/sub> e (instead of 92 gCO<sub>2<\/sub> e).<\/li>\n<li>It is a well-known fact that forests sequester and store carbon. The sustainable management and growth of forest areas in Europe is a central element of the value chain for paper sacks.
